Though the Reds dominated, it took a while for them to begin to test Kasper Schmeichel in the Leicester goal, and it was Trent Alexander-Arnold, on his 150th league outing for the club, who went closest in the first 20 minutes with a left-footed effort.

Goals

It was a cold, wet and windy afternoon in Burnley, but Liverpool came away with all three points thanks to Fabinho‘s first-half goal

Liverpool’s new-found squad depth was on display when the teams were announced, with an extremely strong bench for the Reds featuring Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Thiago and Harvey Elliott.

Jurgen Klopp went for experience and strength in his starting lineup, with both Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah back in for the first time since AFCON for a match that was always going to be difficult.

But despite Liverpool’s strong options in the squad, their bottom-of-the-table opponents had by far the superior chances in the opening half.

Thankfully, Fabinho was alert and reacted to tap in from close range after his first effort off a corner was saved – the Brazilian’s fifth goal in seven games!

February 19, 2022

Goals

Rasicha 48′

Mane 64′ (assist: Tsimikas)

Salah 67′ (assist: Alisson)

Diaz 81′ (assist: Henderson)

Liverpool came from behind to beat Norwich, with two goals in three minutes then Luis Diaz‘s first goal for the club.

Norwich took the lead shortly after the break when Milot Rasicha’s shot from the edge of the box took a massive deflection off Matip and sailed into the opposite corner past Alisson.

Klopp brought on Thiago and Divock Origi just after the hour and with it completely changed the game, moving to a 4-2-3-1 shape.

The atmosphere raised, then within five minutes Liverpool scored twice to turn it around!

First, Mane hit a wonderful overhead kick from Tsimikas’ headed knockdown, then Salah notched his 150th goal for the club when beautifully receiving Alisson‘s long kick and eventually sitting the ‘keeper down and placing the ball into the corner with his right foot.

It was still to get better, with Luis Diaz netting his first goal for the club with 10 minutes to go. The Colombian received Henderson’s through ball in the area and wonderfully chipped the ball over the oncoming ‘keeper.

Liverpool steamrolled Leeds in the first half and moved to within three points of Man City at the top of the Premier League.

The scoring was opened in the 15th minute when Salah converted a penalty by placing it into the bottom corner following a handball by Dallas from Robertson’s cross. Goal number 26 of the season for Mo.

It was 2-0 on the half-hour when Joel Matip scored an absolutely beautiful goal. The centre-back went on one of his trademarks runs through the middle, played a one-two with Salah, and finished perfectly for his first goal since December 2020.

It was 3-0 five minutes later, with a second penalty from Salah, this time after Mane was brought down just inside the box. Mo stepped up and put it the same side of the goal but into the top corner this time.

Liverpool were rampant and Salah almost got his hat-trick just before the interval, chipping over the oncoming ‘keeper but his shot was cleared off the line.

One of those chances was converted with 10 minutes to go when a lovely team move ended with Henderson squaring the ball for Mane to finish for his 10th league goal of the season.

Mane added another in the final seconds, again from close range after good work by Origi down the left wing, then Van Dijk headed home Robertson’s corner in stoppage time.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool (10-11 pens): Reds win the League Cup!

League Cup Final, Wembley

February 27, 2022

Liverpool and Chelsea played out a tough, high-quality League Cup final with a number of goals ruled out for offside, leading to a 11-10 shootout win for the Reds.

With both sets of supporters in fine voice, the game kicked off at a frenetic tempo, and Caoimhin Kelleher was required to pull off a strong point-blank save to keep out Christian Pulisic.

A huge double save from Edouard Mendy kept the scores level on the half-hour mark, first from Naby Keita‘s long-range drive and then Sadio Mane‘s close-range effort – which, in truth, the No. 10 should have converted.

And a big chance fell for Chelsea at the end of the half, but after Mane’s dithering offered them an opportunity to break, Mason Mount swept his volley wide of Kelleher’s post.

On to extra time, then, and Klopp again turned to his bench as Ibrahima Konate swapped in for Matip in a clear effort to counter the added pace of Timo Werner on the left.

The first 15 minutes was an attritional affair, though Lukaku had a goal ruled out for offside, with the tiring legs clearly showing for both sides.

A late substitution, with Mendy making way for Kepa, paved the way for a penalty shootout, which saw the Spaniard blaze over the 22th spot-kick to hand the League Cup to Liverpool.
